Start with the basics.

Timing, Points, plugs, look inside distributor cap if it is scored and or cracked, replace it... hell replace it anyway, their cheap.

Next, I'd check the coil, make sure none of the connections are coroding etc.

Take a look at your plugs and reply back with a description, oily, fouling??

I may be wrong but isn't the fuel pump controlled by the oil pressure switch and if so i would be checking the connections ? I have had this problem with my 80 4X4 and am going to go through all my connections and the fuse box and will be using D-Ox on the connections.FYI D-Ox is a product you can get at a elec. store and is for alu. wire and it will not let anything corrode again even works on your battery connections.

When I took off the old distributor it and the new one don't fit just right the little plastic thing that the wires hookup 2 that go through the side that go 2 the points sticks up a little and is keeping the dissy from sealin off good. tomorrow i'm going 2 try 2 cut out a little gap where the little plastic thang is. Mabe it will seal off. Has any body else had a problem whith this before

There is supposed to be a cut-out in the cap for that little tab. Look in your old cap and you will see. If the new one doesn't have the same thing, it's probably the wrong cap.

Symptoms almost sound like a little water in the gas tank to me. My 77 used to do that sort of random sputter crap to my ex-wife, I figured it just didn't like her but turned out to be a bad hose on the breather tube that goes from the tank to the filler neck. It was letting just a little water in the tank when it rained. You might pull the fuel filter and check it out. Disconnect it carefully and then drain it inlet side down into a clean container, preferably clear glass. You should see bubbles of water on the bottom of the glass if you've got water in there.

Good advice.

Isn't it alway good to know when something posted here saves someone a bunch of misery?

These little trucks can and will drive you a little bonkers at times.

Where would we all be without Ben, all of these members, and this site?

Hope you didnt cut it yet...I got to thinking, check that plastic gromet and see if the last owner didn't put it in upside down, it will slide in USD, but will stick up about 3/8" higher than the edge It can be pulled straight up and out with needle nose pliers
