Symptoms almost sound like a little water in the gas tank to me. My 77 used to do that sort of random sputter crap to my ex-wife, I figured it just didn't like her but turned out to be a bad hose on the breather tube that goes from the tank to the filler neck. It was letting just a little water in the tank when it rained. You might pull the fuel filter and check it out. Disconnect it carefully and then drain it inlet side down into a clean container, preferably clear glass. You should see bubbles of water on the bottom of the glass if you've got water in there.
