i just bought this bad boy for $400. no lift 28" tires, the engine runs great, my trannys soon to shit the bed, bodys 1 million dif colors, little bit of rust, bed is %70 good. I plan on rebuilding tranny and engine this summer, and doing some body work and fresh paint, 2" body lift. when people ask how it drives, i tell them its like driving a go kart with bad alignment---haha the old ball n chain has a jeep with 33's, this thing went everywhere she did and more, this is the 5th 4x4 ive owned from toyota to dodge, and so far im most impressed with its capabilities. what gear ratio in the rear, i heard 4.10 but that seems to bad ass, is it true?

Alright, another 4x4 LUV.

You're right, these baby's will go just about anywhere any other 4x4 will go. I have yet to get mine stuck... and I have had in some pretty sloppy places.

Good luck to ya on the mods, will soon add 2" lift body, much larger wheels and tires. Torsion bars already up about 2 " and Rough Country add/leaf in the back.

yeah the axles are either 4.10s or 4.56s, my Haynes manual says that automatic tranny trucks come with 4.10s and manual tranny trucks come with 4.56s but I dont know for sure. Anyway NICE TRUCK!!!

well 79, i would go with a 2" body. ya dont get enough clearance. i have that on mine and can only put 29's on it. and thats after i bent the fenders in so they wouldnt rub in front. you dont get enough ground clearance with 2" atleast go 4". same to you off road... all 4x4's had 4.56 also, alot of people find jeep front ends to match 2wd luvs rear 4.10 because they are better for wheeling...

All 4x4 luvs came stock with 4.11 gears not 4.56. Somewhere in drivetrain upgrades I think there is a thread with what each year came with originally.

Later Isuzu put 4.56 gears in the first few years of Trooper with the same diffs, so 4.56 gears can be found to fit in a LUV if you want to help counteract some loss of get up and go from larger tires.

Does the gear ration vary in the first few years of the Trooper? I thought I remember seeing in a post somwether were there was 2 differnt sizes. But maybe that was in the 86 Trooper when they started makign significant changes.

my bad, they came with 4.10's in 4x4's and 4.56's in 2wd's. mixed em up...

yeah, i broke a front cv the other night. sucked, i was on a long hill and had to winch a long ways... took me 2hrs to get outta there, and my winch got balled up and bound at 1 point... really made me mad.

the 4.56's are better for wheelin if you can find a jeep or yota strait front to match em... people used to put jeep front ends under couriers for wheeling as a better option for about another 3k instead of the independent. im puttin a courier 4wd front and rear axle under my luv because they are tuff...

I read a post on Posi's. In the drivetrain upgrade forum, theres a post (quite awhile ago) about putting the third members from the the Troopers into the Luv. I think the Posi is still avaliable for the Troopers. I thought about lockers, but my driving will be a ratio of 50/50 of highway vs off road. So I figure the Posi will be better in my situation.
