I just bought a '79 4x4 w/o an engine. I have the original 4cyl out of my '75 2wd. (awaiting the 350 swap) Does anybody know if the 75 will work with the 79 4x4 trans?
it looks like the motor(frame) mounts are farther back, but I can make/modifie them. If I remember correctly the exhaust side and the intake/carb side are on the opposite sides.
I am sure somebody here has an idea if this is possible, or know of any tricks/ideas to do it? thanks

theres a few other things to worry about, biggest one of them is i think the starter is on the other side for the early engines. That and i think the bellhousings were diferent and as you said the motor mounts are diferent...

MEPR is right. It wont directly fit. But the early 1.8 motors aren't as good as the later G180's anyway. It would be smoother to just fix or replace the original motor than to try and swap out to an older, weaker design engine.

I was afraid of that!! well then here's another option I have:
I have a buick 3.8 V6 with buick/ponti/olds th-350. is there a transfer case (most likely divorced) that would work?
or would it interfere with the front diff?
If this won't work, I guess I will sell both engines and find the right engine for it
thanks for the help!!

Hell, if you go with a divorced T-case, the sky's the limit. If you had a few x-tra bucks there is a company (I'd have to dig for it...) that sells a kit to make the bullet-proof Toyota T-case a divorced unit......... If you already have a motor and trans, I'd look hard at that......

But why stop there? The swap would go lot's easier with a solid front axle!!!!!!!!!!!!! Out of, well I don't know, maybe a TOYOTA?????

Good luck, and send us pic's!

The oil pan will probably be you biggest but that can be modified, the t-case is apiece of cake as your trans will work best if you use a 4x4 out put shaft and a t-case off off of a GM from 87 back, all this can be rounded up pretty cheap and you would have something that would be easy to service and maintain on the road if need be.
