The tranny and t-case are all one unit, so your going to have to drop it all, and trust me it aight light by any means, it would be best to have a floor jack or tranny jack under there to get it out, obviously your going to have to remove the rear drive shaft and disconnect the front one. You'll also have to unbolt the t-case cross-member, and don't forget to disconnect the clutch cable as well. If there's anything else that i've forgotten one of the other guys should be able to give you a heads up. have fun, hope it all goes well for ya

oh yes i forgot about those "little" items

Speedo cable will need to be disconnected, should be connected on the tail section of the tranny/t-case unit. crusie control won't be an issue as the Luv never came with it. and yes it would be wise to remove the shifters first as well.

Royal Purple is just a brand of synthetic lubricants. I've never accually used the stuff myself but i've heard that it's good, me personally I use Lucas gear lube in my diffs and tranny, haven't had any problems what so ever using the stuff.

Royal Purple is a good quality, well respected lubricant. Keep in mind though that things aren't always the way they are in the commercials. :D

It's a good quality oil like I said, but it's also expensive. Unless you really insist on giving it the best, there are other good quality brands that can be had cheaper, that are still of good quality. I think my Dad's garage used Valvoline brand oils for differentials... It doesn't really matter as long as it isn't Bob's brand. :)

i have never dropped the tranny without pulling the engine. That said since the tranny crossmember is welded in place i doubt it is even possible to pull the tranny with out pulling the engine...
As far as lubricants go, i have always just run Valvoline 85w90 in the tranny/t-case and the diffs. Its cheap and always on hand. A problem you might run into with those fance synthetics is needing to order the stuff. Thats why i just run "dino" oil. But what ever you do, dont buy synthetic blends. From what i have read they are no beter than the "dino" oils.

In some other posts here people have said it is possible to pull a 2WD trans out alone, and a 4WD also, but it is a major pain in the ass.

:? I don't know I haven't ever tried.

I've pulled a 4x4 trans leaving the motor in place, but the truck had 2 inches of body lift. I think it would be possible in a truck at stock height, but I've yet to actually be forced to do it. Just pull the motor and trans together and fix it.

One thing though, can't the rear seal can be replaced without pulling the trans? Sure, it is a bit easier with the trans out, but I'd rather do it under the truck than wrestle the motor and trans out. If you are going that far, buy a clutch, resurface the flywheel, replace the rear main seal, and maybe even go for the front trans seal. Might as well make it the complete deal if the trans is coming out.

No Chavy. You just pull the eng. and trans out as 1 piece, then separate them , then fix your trans. and then put them back together , then put them in the truck as 1 piece.
It's probably easier this way because taking the trans out and leaving the eng. in means the trans has to come out from the bottom and there is no room to work and it is very hard to do. You don't have to get a new eng. your just taking it out to get it out of the way.

If your asking about the rear main seal in the eng. Thats a judgement call. Yes yours is pretty new but you'll be in there and its only about a $10 part and a lot harder to do later when your not in there, if it were to go bad.

Do you understand that you pull the motor and trans together, then separate them. YOU ARE NOT REPLACING THE ENGINE, just pulling it out as it is ALLOT EASIER TO PULL THE ENGINE AND TRANS TOGETHER, then rebuild the trans, bolt up to the motor and reinstall.
