Who has done it? Any tips on what needs to happen to be pulled safely about 450 miles? And what is the dry weight of a stock 1980 Luv 4x4? :?:

Thanks :ebiggrin

are you pulling it on a dolly or on all 4 with a tow bar?

to be on the safe side i would pull the drive shafts but i dont think anything would happen if you didn't as long as it was in neutral :ewink

The weight of a LUV is usually in the owners' manual; I would estimate about 3000 pounds for your truck.

My other truck is a 4x4, and IIRC if you tow it with 4 wheels down you have to pull at least the front driveshaft. If it's not too much trouble pull both of them, then you should be OK towing no faster than about 45 or 50 mph. That way the trans and T-case are not being spun needlessly with a load they were not designed for- it would be like coasting down a hill for 400 miles at 45 mph.

Pull the back drive shaft loose and wire it up or pull it completely out the front hubs will take care of the rest.

only prob with pulling the rear driveshaft out completely is that unless you have a plug you'll end up losing most of your tranny fluid.

I'd say disconnect the rear and wire it up like TJ said, and then just unlock the front hubs and leave both the tranny and t-case in neutral. I've towed mine like that numerous times and haven't had a problem with it

I towed a 75 luv from Litchfield Ill to Springfield MO(300 miles) with my 79 4x4 Luv on a tow dolly. It did great. I pulled the drive shaft had no problems. My 79' has a new S&S 4cyl, Weber and 235/75's. Wish I had the stockers on it it would have handled the hills much better.

At what speed were you towing?

The truck had no problem cruising at 70 on straight aways. There were some pretty big hills, there is a reason they have 3 lanes on those. It ran great the whole trip. I got 15mpg towing(normally on a long trip it's closer to 20)

When I pulled the drive shaft I cut an empty water bottle in half and ducktaped it over the output shaft, didn't lose any fluid.

technically when the shifter is in 2wd Hi it is in neutral...it accomplishes the same effect
