both when i start it wether im puting in first or nutrual if i dont let go of the clutch fast enought to get it in gear it stall. and when i come to a stop and push in the clutch it does the same thing. its about 50 % of the time it dies on me and both times the engine light and the oil light both come on when it dies either way.

That definitely sounds like a vacuum problem (if it's the easy fix...). I had the same problem before (and after) I rebuilt the engine in mine, someone had a vacuum line hooked up wrong (and I hooked it up wrong after the engine went back in  , wasn't my brightest move)... Then again, the valves were pretty burnt also (that might be part of your problem too)... Routed the vac. lines according to the diagram under the hood, and it ran fine...
Best of luck

im have the same problem with mine or both of the problems and mine is a 76 2x4 with an auto. i changed the fuel pump and it helped a bit but its the carb. stupid hitachi carbs stink. mine seems to like to adjust the air and fuel ratio on its own every now and then. i have to adjust them back to where it idles right. just tweak the screws on the side a bit and rev the engine after each tweak then let it sit a moment and try again till it sounds good. at least that works for me until i find a cheap weber to put on :)

I see two probable problems 1 make sure your ign. is tuned up and timing set right (adjust points) The other is check your egr valve and make sure it is not sticking open as it will not idle if it is and make sure you have the proper vac. to it.
