You can get a little bit in front by cranking up the torsion bars.

You can get a little bit in the back with longer shackles, added springs, or re-arced springs.

After that, you're talking serious mods.

what bucket said...

I was being pecimistic as usual. :ebiggrin if you are new to the 4x4 scene, wheel what you have for now, best way to start, you will learn so much more (trust me, '84 s-10 extra cab STOCK). Look into doing a SAS if you are serious about this sport. It's the only way to go, unless you want to stick a 3" body lift *barf* and crank the torsion bars *barf again* and cut fenders (i am not opposed to this one  ) but enjoy the cheap stocker lifestyle while you can, I am now a full blown addict

so ya, your choices right out of the gates:

-body lift (2" i would accept, any more and it's unsafe in my eyes.)
-torsion bar crank/clocking, cranking the torsion bars jsut adds unnecesary stress to the front end.
-SAS best for 4x4ing, it will cost a lot more than a B.L. or torsion crank. I always say that you should expect to pay $1500 all said and done...
-Cut fenders, cheap cheap cheap for clearance, costs the same as a torsion bar crank, Time.

I would go to salvage yards and try to fing an old Toyota and jack the axles or find a dana 60 front and then a 14 bolt rear (their alot stronger) but it all depends on how serious you want to get. 8)

There is no off the shelf type susp. lift kits as such, but there are a few mods you can do.
1. Fit uca's off a 81/82Luv or uca,s off a first gen Trooper.
2. Flip the ball joints in the uca's an add spacers.
3. Remove the downward travel bump stops.
4. Crank the t bars to the max.
5. After doing all of the above your cv's will be at extreme angles so now modify the diff mounts to drop the diff about 1.5 inches.
6. Add longer shackels to the rear to level things out.
7. Trim the fenders and stuff the largest diameter tyre you can fit under there.

How about real serious! Rock crawling!!

I have had many a 79, of which two had a 4" lift and ran 33's and even experminted with 38's. Yes "sawzall's" do fine work on fender modifacation. The 38's fit, but placed wear and tear on the ride and the driver. With the 33's we took that LUV everwhere! And even some places it didn't want to go. We got the oppurtonuity to show off Evans Creek ORV course to many a new club that would venture thru. At the creation of the ORV park, we spent many hours going over and over the course. Very few knew about it besides the locals and the club developing it. But, now I'am unsure about what type of supension will give me the best performance, flexability for rock crawling. I'am not worried about the cost. After 31 years of playing in the mud, snow, I know how expensive it gets. All advise and information is well apreciated and will diffently help.
