Hey - we haven't tried to use the 4 wheel drive on the truck yet (it's an '81) mostly because we aren't sure of the correct procedure, and we don't want to mess something up or break anything. For some reason our 26 year old truck didn't come with an owner's manual!!!)

What do we do to put it IN to 4 wheel drive mode, and what is the correct way to take it OUT of 4 wheel drive? Thanks very much!

From the 79 4x4 owners manual... condensed version.

Vehicle moving: The tcase can be shifted without depresing the clutch from 2H to 4H or 4H to 2 H

When shifting into 2H from 4H, there may be a lag....

Front axle hubs should be locked when the transfer shift lever is shifted into 4H range.

Never shift from 4H to 4L or 4L to 4H while moving

To shift from 2H rwd to 4H(awd high range): may be made at any speed with hubs locked

From 4H to 2H: may be made at any speed
move lever into posistion
momentarily release or slightly depress accelerator to relieve sliding sleeve movement.

Do not use 4L or 4H unless hubs are in Lock position.

Transfer case must be shifted to 2H before unlocking hubs.

2H- High Range, normal 2 wheel driving

4H high range, all 4 wheels driving

4L DO NOT EXCEED 45 MPH

4L and 4H not recommended for pavement

Not from the book, but acceptable ( in every Mini 4x4 I've owned including the LUV ) You can put the truck in 4-lo with the front hubs out giving you 2-lo. I've used this to save my clutch when backing trailers or creaping through the yard, ect.......

Just don't get crazy with it, and never shift into 4-lo while the truck is moving.

Have wondered, if you can drive around in 4H(awd) without tearing up the T-case. Any advantages to that?

And... can your hubs be damaged from someone locking them on you without your noticing, meanwhile you drove around for days.

In my owners manual it recommends that you drive the vehicle with the hubs locked for ten miles periodically without the 4 wheel drive engaged to keep everything lubricated

It's not good to drive too far on dry pavement in 4-wheel drive (hubs in) this puts a lot of stress on the front end, and t-case (also it's not good to drive over 40mph in 4-HI).

It is good to throw your hubs in once a month and drive around town (less than 10-15 miles) to keep the front end lubed up.

I go to the top rpm in 4th gear in 4 lo (on dirt roads). It tops out about 25 or 30 mph if I remember correctly. My front drive shaft is bad so it makes some strange noises though. :D 8O
