OK this is my 1st 4X4 of any kind. It smoothly works it's way from 4 hi to 2hi while driving. So I'm asking you other guys with 4X4s, when you have it in 4 hi, where does your shifter sit?

See drawing....

When I shift from D to C it goes into 4WD. there is no neutral. Then it wants to sit right there in C on it's own (unless I drive the truck, then it moves back into D). But I can move it between C and B with my hand. No gears change, it's in 4 hi, but the shifter moves smoothly like the main shifter does when you wiggle it in neutral.

And from B into A works fine. It stays there until I move it. But again there is no real neutral in between these two.

So I guess my question is (sorry) When you are in 4 Hi, does your shifter sit in the B or the C?

I trying to figure out if it's a detent failure or a trans. failure.

It is hard to tell between d and c in mine. Put it in D and make sure your hubs are free. Then try and turn the drive shaft for the 2 front wheels. If they spin freely, they are not connected in the transfer case. Try this in C and D and see how they feel.

The gears change for sure between D and C. Before I had the boot in I could see through the hole in the floor. Plus if I'm moving a little it grinds.

I know that B and C are the same gear, 4 hi, but mine wants to rest in C, and then when I start going it jumps back into D.

Does your's rest in C or B?

Are you sure your hubs are locked into free first? Once mine is in 2 hi it stays there. Does your transfer case have enough lube in it?

Ron...on my 80 when in 4Hi the shifter is in "B"...there is a small spring that attaches to the shifter to hold it in that position when in 4Hi...it could be that that spring was removed from your truck. You could go to a salvage yard and pick one up or use a bungee cord to hold the shifter in "B" which would keep it from popping back into "D" or 2Hi. Hope that helps ya

That helps a lot. Thank's Rezkid. That was the answer I was hoping for. I'll look in my book for that spring.

I assume you can't see it until you pull the shifter out, right?

I hope to make it right, but I've already thought about the bungee idea.

you can see the spring if you pull the shifter boot off. it attaches on top of the tranny/t-case

OK. I know I don't have one, so I have to put one on.

Thanks again.

We're getting ready for our annual camp out / dirt bike / ATV etc. ride for Thanksgiving in the desert and I want to get this thing working well.

No that's cool. I don't want you to risk tearing your boot.

I found a pic in my big LUV book that shows the spring but not very clear where it goes. I will look some more and look at my shifter close this weekend. I'm sure I will figure it out.
I'm just glad is probably a spring missing and not a trans. problem.
Thanks.

lol, boot was trashed when I put the body lift on so no worries there...that and my tranny is sitting in my shop right now, and I have the shifter, spring and such out.

Very cool, thanks. I pulled my boot off tonight, and saw that little bracket for the spring. I don't know why I didn't notice and question it before.?.?
I put a spring on it that I found in the garage. It's not the proper one (a little big) but will work for now. I locked in the hubs and put her in 4 hi and went around the block. Works fine. 8) :smt003
