My rear seal in my tranny is leakin. how do tell what transmission it is. The parts store i called said he had to know if it was a g180 or a g200 I think. My truck is a 1980 4x4 with a 1.8 engine. Please help me out if you might know any info on this subject

old thread I know  but your tranny is an Isuzu MSG-4, they used this tranny up until 85 in Isuzu 4x4 Pup's and Troopers after that they went over to the MSG-5 and later the MUA-5

Will an MSG-5 bolt up to a G180?

yes, it will...as far as if you have to use a different throwout bearing or not I don't know. the MUA-5 will also bolt up to the G180...you can use the stock clutch/flywheel/pressure plate but you have to use the MUA-5's throwout bearing...the standard LUV throwout bearing is too small.

But the chassis cross member at the rear of the trans is vastly different. On the 4 speed its the same length as the 2x4 box and uses the same member. The 5 speed is 6 or 8 inches longer and uses a different setup thats attached to the chassis further back. Your drive shafts are also different, the jack shaft for the front diff is longer and the main tailshaft to the rear is shorter.
The 4 speed crossemeber will basically be where the transfer hangs out for the front shaft on a 5 speed.

Msg-5 and Mua-5 are the same physical dimentions, im not sure but the flange for the front shaft could be bigger.
