Howdy. I'm from south Texas and currently a student at Mercer University in Macon, GA. My main car is a Saturn for gas mileage, but I have an old LUV sittin' my backyard that I want to start tinkering with. I believe it's a 81?? But i'm not sure. I'm just here right now to read up on what it's going to take it get her driveable again.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That is me, btw.

Just to elaborate a little more on the truck...the body is all black in color, save for the roof of the cab, which is white. There is minimal body rust. It is all surface rust. I am unsure on the frame. I also do not know of the condition of the transmission, but I am 99.9% sure the motor is no good because the valve cover has been sittin' in the bed of the truck for 10 years. I don't know why the truck was parked either. Most of this information I won't be able to get until I return home to Texas in december.

Would it be worth the trouble to try and rebuild the engine, or should I just look for a used 1.8L to drop it?

Are there any other engines that are a direct bolt in with the stock mounts and transmissions? Right now, I am not looking for massive amounts of power, I'm just looking to get it running.

One last thing, with a truck sitting in the same place for a while, what all needs to be done to get it going again ? I know the fuel tank needs to be dropped, emptied, cleaned, and treated. Fuel lines will probably need to be either cleaned or replaced. Transmission fluid and brake fluid needs to be replaced. New battery. Anything else? This is all based on the assumption the engine will be replaced.

Well just because the valve cover is off, might not be all bad. I am guessing you don't know alot on it's history. Well throw it back together and see what's up with it. You might be surprised, it could just need the valves adjusted. Wouldnt that be nice. Well we are here for any of your questions, and welcome to the site!!!!

Well, after doing a little bit of research, and drawing back to past memories of the LUV (I never really payed much attention to it). I recall it does have the two side latches to hold on the tailgate. That means that it isn't a 1981 or newer, correct? I think that (based on pictures i have found on the net), in 1981 they switched to the tailgate handle thingie to being in the middle of the tailgate.

It sucks havin' my LUV 1200 miles away. I don't get to really inspect/tinker with it until December.
