Hey all!

Plan is tomorrow to become a 1980 Luv owner. Non 4x4. Baby blue sitting on 17’s I think? I’m new to luv trucks but not classics. Anything specifically to look out for aside from typical old car stuff? Any help appreciated and look forward to sharing and then finding out some Isuzu tweets to get just a bit mor umph from it??

Here’s a shot of the truck. If anyone knows anything about it history wise I’d love info. Located in Dayton OH at this time.

Look for rust on the rockers, floor and frame in front of the rear wheels

Immediate upgrades for "more umph" would be a Weber 36/32 carb swap and a Pertronix 1643 ignition module to replace the points with.

Next would be (as you can afford it) a set of Pacesetter headers (with the complete exhaust to go with them).

Try to avoid the itch to go SBC. :D

With a 2WD you most likely will fail to avoid it, but try anyway.

Thanks already. Know where to look for rust and I’m coming from BMW 2002 so the 32/36 and pertronix I’m quite familiar with. Not leaving bmw but trying to get a daily in the LUV. So dig these trucks. If I had the balls to convert a 2002 into a truck I couldn’t get closer than the LUV minus those square headlight bezels!!! Look forward to this guy. Thanks again!

No SBC ever here. No worries!

The truck is home safely "back" in KY again.

Drove it home roughly 60 miles or so without issue. LOTS of bump steer in this thing!! Those 17" wheels like to find a groove in the road and run with it!! Already considering the PS conversion in the future, but that will come after addressing cab mount and rear frame rot issues. Then on to Heat... noticed no blower functionality which we will need here. Great runner! Has the Weber carb already... likes to stall out once in a while when coming to a stop so I'll be checking into that as well asap.

Look forward to sharing and contributing to the wealth of knowledge on the forum.

Ryan

The blower should run all the time. Even in the off position, at a low speed. A safety feature...

Blower non-functioning is one of 3 things - fuse, resistor, motor

The switches aren't really prone to go out (they do, but not very often). The fuse of course is the easiest to check. Resistor is next easiest. The motor is a right PITA because you pretty much have to drop the entire HVAC system to get to it (IIRC).

Check your anti sway bar end links for the bump steer. With the torsion bar suspension on these the ASB does a lot (unlike coil or leaf spring vehicles). Also check your tie rods and the steering box (both for play and for mounting strength).

Great truck!

Those wheels come off of Chevy trucks, mainly the later version WTs and some regular cab models. I am thinking 2010 to about 2017 or so.

Look up an Isuzu Florian. It is the car the luv started off as. Your 2002 as a pickup comment made me think you might find those amusing especially the rectangle headlights on a "LUV"

the florian was the base from which the luv/fasters was made. plenty of differences between them though, im still trying to get my 1969 florian front end fitted to my luv!
