I got this 79 luv about 1981 from a friend that was letting it go back to the bank. I'm a retired trucker and was on the road a lot so the Luv did not get used much. 80,000 miles on it. The last few years it set a lot and been neglected. The last time I drove it the gen light came on. One estimate I got was a $1000 to tune it up. I don't think I want to put that much into it as I don't drive it very much. They were taking sparkplugs and wiring etc. At the time the generator was working and I had a rebuilt a few thousand miles ago. Does that figure seem reasonable for a tune up or would I be better off selling it as i'm not a collector? Bob in Waco TX

Research youtube for videos on how to do a tuneup yourself.

A basic Harbor Freight tool kit and you could be up and running in no time.

Spark plugs
Distributor Cap
Distributor rotor
Distributor points
Distributor condenser
Spark plug wire set
Air filter
Fuel filter

All those are clickable links to those parts. Total is about $100.

A basic oil change at Jiffy Lube or Oil Can Henry's and you're set. Probably need a new battery and seriously think about replacing belts and hoses, but that's about it.

You can literally do the entire tune up with a Phillips screwdriver, feeler gauges and a spark plug socket. At the end of it you'll have a fun little truck that will amaze you with what it will still do. :D

Alternators are cheap as well but should replace with a new voltage regulator too. For a grand there must be more to the story then what we are hearing. Even if shop rates were 100 per hour and figure 200 in parts that’s 8 hours labor.

A couple hundred dollars for parts is not bad but at my age not sure I want to tackle the job. I suppose I could just do a little at a time. Gives me something to think about.

I don't have the energy to work on this. Where would be a good place to list it?

You can list it here in the classifieds. There is also a few LUV groups on Facebook that have had some success on quick sales. Between these two it should sale fairly quickly.
