I've been wanting an old truck to fix up...out of the blue my brother-in-law gives me a 1980 Luv.

Was running about a week or so ago. Now it won't start up. Will turn over and only fires up with carb cleaner/starting fluid but won't stay on.

I've got my work cut out for me...I'm sure I'll be scouring the forum for answers.

kinda sounds like no fuel so try your fuel filter and/or fuel pump

Yeah, that's what I was going to go after next. I can hear the fuel pump kicking on, but I don't know if it's making it all the way to the carb without a second set of eyes. The pump is making a sort of clicking noise. Don't know if the line is clogged or the pump is bad. Maybe I'll pull the line somewhere and see if it's pumping up to the engine before I replace it.

you could pull the fuel line off the carb and run it to container and use your battery connection as your switch (leave your key on)

Raw fuel or fumes and sparks from the battery are not a good mix unless you are wearing a fire suit.

I just swapped out the fuel filter with a clear one to see if it was pulling up to the fuel filter that is just before the carburetor. It is, but it doesn't seem like the fuel is being pulled into the carburetor like it should. Once the starting fluid burns up, it dies. I can rev it with the gas petal and it seems to stay on longer, but still dies. However, I can't see how the carburetor is reacting while doing so. Could it be there is something wrong with the carburetor that can be causing it?

Yeah sounds like a carb rebuild is required. You probably have a stuck float.

Well...after a little more tinkering I found the simplest solution was the right one. I pulled the fuel line and ran it to a container, and got nothing. This is an aftermarket fuel pump, not stock. So I replaced it with a Mr. Gasket universal pump. After adjusting idle and throttle I finally got it to fire up and hold idle.

That being said, I think it still needs a carb rebuild or replace, still wouldn't start without some help and I'm wonderingly if the choke isn't closing fully on startup.

Then, a day later I try to start it and get nothing...I can't hear the brand new fuel pump humming like it did when I first installed it. Going to check wiring tonight after work.
