Hello. I may have an opportunity to build a 78 Luv for my son who is 14 right now. He wants an old vehicle as his first. My Bro-in-law has a 78 Luv that he put on a K5 4x4 Blazer frame. It is definitely not pretty. However, he told me that I could have the truck if I want it. I have no desire for the K5 frame. B-I-L does not have the stock Luv frame any longer so I would need to find some donor like an S10 rolling chassis for this to work. What type of emission equipment came on the 78 Luv's? I am hoping it is minimal so I can just put a vortec 305 or 4.3v6 in it. Any help is very much appreciated.

I would find a LUV frame. It is stronger than the s-10 frame. Flip side though is you would have the 5 lug suspension, and the 4.3 would mount right in. Welcome to the site and good luck with the build...

Well at this point I am not committed to the build. I am a little concerned about what emission equipment is needed on a 78 here in Az. And I have read that the Luv frame is stronger but everything else on the S10 would be an upgrade I would think.

Being in Arizona there are some good deals for Luvs on Craigslist. You may be able to pick up an older chassis with a title and combine the parts. Are there exempt years for smog like California?

I think we are still stuck at 67 and up for smog checks but I am not sure what years can be used for classis insurance. I think that's the only way around the smog junk. I'm still not even sure I want to do this...I can't seem to get a start on my 71 camaro....lol.

The smof laws in the Meteo Phoenix and Tuscon areas are worse then California's. Usually a "second" home in Prescott does the trick.

Yeah we used to register vehicles to the family cabin up in Forest Lakes but some of the family members are greedy and want to sell it so we don't have that option available anymore. They've owned the cabin and land since 1958!

LOL....you haven't seen it up close. I went and looked at it and was a little bit surprised to say the least. If I do get it, it will not stay on that frame....no way in heck would I trust it with my son driving it. It has absoltely no interior except for a homemade wood dash panel and console and two plastic racing seats. I is going to take a ton of work to save it. The rear fenders(bed sides) have been cut on the front side to clear the tires instead of centering the rear tires and opening the fenders in front and back evenly so it needs a new bed. In all reality the only good part of the truck is the cab and title.
