our version of the Chev LUV is a "holden Rodeo" pretty much the same KB26 1981-ish

my ute is lime metallic green - gold pearl, Mitsubishi rear bumper and Toyota grill. motor is a 2.0 with 4 speed.
previously had a 1600 with 1800 head but needs rebuild ,, also have a 5 speed to go in once I get rid of the growly monster that lives within .. :)

Welcome to the site. Around here, that's called a 2nd-generation LUV.

The pre-1986 5-speeds were known for self-destructing. Is that what you have? If you could find one from an '86-'95, it's much stronger.

thanks mytmous,,

Jack thanks for the info re gearbox.. to be honest I bought the project as a wreck,- it had been rear ended, and pushed the left front into a tree. I paid $50 for the lot , which included a spare diff housing and 5 speed .. is there a way to tell by number, .. A local website here ( similar to ebay) looks like gearboxes up to mid 90's are usable. even 4wd boxes look as if you could un-bolt the transfer case, and slip a 2wd tailshaft on to them...

Thanks Al

Not by any numbers that I know of. You can identify them by the number of splines on the output shaft. If it has 27 splines, that's the stronger one. I'm referring to the MSG transmissions that were used behind the 4ZD1, not the MUA transmissions. The MUA is a whole different beast.
