Hi all! After my last daily driver blew the motor I was searching local classifieds for a replacement. Not wanting to drive my avalanche all the time, I was hoping to find a little truck (actually looking for an s10) just to drive to work and such. Then I came across this little beast! Never thought about wanting a luv but the price was sure right. Needs some work as it's not idling right, and a couple minor things like the park brake lever being froze up so I can't keep it stopped in neutral, but for $500 how can you go wrong??

As most of the rust is just surface, I think I am going to try and do some bodywork to it this summer. Nothing too fancy probably just go back to solid black with a fresh coat of paint. Will post pictures along it's way, but for now just wanted to stop and tell everyone hello!

The body looks really straight. Nice buy for $500 for sure.

Really nice! This is what the folks here call a "2nd generation" LUV, and some of them even consider it an ugly step-brother to the original. ;) But I like it because it's the twin of the Isuzu P'up, separated at birth.

You didn't mention if it's diesel, so I assume a gas 1.8L. Correct?

Yes it is gas. He gave me a carb kit with it so hopefully I can get it running right, that and the lack of park brake are my 2 biggest concerns. so if I am looking for some parts (like rearview mirrors and a turn signal lens) is the isuzu close enough that those parts will fit? (or can be made to do so). I am pretty competent around a vehicle with working on things, but this Isuzu motor is very foreign to me. I am assuming from looks someone already put an aftermarket header on at some point, unless the factory exhaust manifolds looks like a longtube header? Also, did these originally come with electronic ignition? My dizzy looks newer than the rest of the motor and is hooked up to a coil pack.

The later models (like yours) had an electronic ignition. The first generation luvs (72-80) had points style ignition.

I can't answer questions about gas engines, but the trucks are identical twins except for the names and some cosmetics. Anything mechanical from an Isuzu P'up of the same year should be completely interchangeable with the LUV.

that question was for the mirrors/lens that kinda cosmetic stuff. Maybe i should look into that, may be a little easier to find parts for!

By "cosmetic stuff" I meant badging and trim (decals, pin striping, moldings). Mirrors and lenses should be the same, but there were some different mirrors even in just the two years this LUV was sold.

Nice truck. I have to tell you that rebuilding these carbs is a tuff thing to do, the vast majority are not successful. Do a search oabout a Weber replacement carb, it's the same as the 77 to 80 carb. It will not pass emissions if you have to but most notice a power gain and better idle.
