I just bought this 79 Luv 4X4 step side. It reminded me of the Luv that my grandfather had when I was growing up. So I had to buy it.
Well, it was 3 hours away, ALMOST made it home. It died 5 miles from the house. The alternator locked up tighter then a drum. Would you beleive no parts store around here had an alternator for it. I had to have one ordered. My wife had to tow me home (making brownie points about buying the truck).
I've replaced the alternator and she won't stay running, nor will the "GEN" light go out. I am in the process of replacing the fuel pump right now.
What really sucks about this whole thing. Now that the LUV is in the garage and the wife has got a good look at it. I've lost it. She wants to drive it and my 14 year old son thinks it's going to be his when he turns 16.
Just had to share my storey of buying and losing my LUV in the same day.

DONT REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP. If these trucks wont charge the fuel pump relay will not energize. Fix the charging problem, if you have to get it running jump the relay or add power at the fuel pump.

exactly what luvrv8 said,I had to hot wire my fuel pump because of a bad relay.it took about 5 of us a week to figure out what the hell was wrong

Don't remember exactly how it's doen but energize you new alternater. You have to hit 12 votes to one of the 3 wires off your alternator to get it going. I just don't remember which wire it is, sorry. I have just hit all the wires one at a time with a wire thats hooked up to the battery till the alternater kicks in. Hope this helps.
