The gear drive starter kicks out when trying to start. I took it off and had it bench tested at advance auto. Tested out good. I cleaned the contact points on the starter and block and both connection points from the negative battery cable. Still no good. The starter gear and flywheel are in remarkably good shape. Anybody know what gives? I'm wondering if the bench test was no good since the starter isn't under load. Also wondering if maybe I don't have a tight rocker arm, since I tightened the valves shortly before this starting happening. Maybe the starter is just too weak to deal with the added compression. guesses?

Your bendix drive on the starter is getting bad.

Fitzworld is dead right your starter drive is bad and a bench test will not reveal it unless manually try to turn the starter drive backwards. You can do this your self as it will turn one way easily and not the other if good, the have a one way clutch. Good luck
