Hi my name is Matt I'm from Asheboro NC. I have an '81 2.2 LUV and I've been wanting to put a different exaust on my LUV. I was just wondering if I could put 3" stright on it (how). Will i need a different manifold? Also do you think 3" will sound good?

Thanks
Matt

OK, if you do it like I did you will need a manifold off of a 84+ pup w/ a N/A Diesel. These manifolds have a 2" outlet compared to the stock 1 5/8" manifold on the 81-83's. Then you can make the pipe bigger AFTER it passes the e-brake cable linkage bolted to the firewall, I have 2" on mine and it has formed a dent in my downpipe from the motor twisting about and hitting the linkage braket/fork/whatever it's called. I would suggest you route your exhaust from the manifold 2" put a flex-pipe where the stock one was and then up the diameter to 3" after the flex peice.

I have had my exhaust disconnected (with the stock pipe) from the flex-pipe back, this makes it sound like a pissed-off pig with PMS; however since you'll have 3" exhaust you'll have a nice deep growl to it even w/o a flowmaster. You'd need a muffler to pass emissions. You might want to put a fake one in place or find an inspector that won't get nosey and check your exhaust. Bring it by sometime at Terry labonte and let me take a peak once it's all done.

Good Luck

I have a 2.25" stainless exhaust with a MagnaFlow muffler and it sounds real sweet. I have an 82 LUV, so unfortunately I have that smaller exhaust manifold. Need to eventually get the bigger manifold that Finalman speaks of. Some advice for bigger exhaust on our trucks; I wouldn't go with pipe that's any bigger than 2.25" in diameter. Before I got the exhaust installed on my truck I had my mind set on 2.5", but after thinking like an engineer I felt 2.25" was just as good. You don't want to go too big on these naturally aspirated diesels because flow won't be as good as the medium size pipe (like 2-2.25"). 3" piping is too big, but on a turbo diesel engine I would say go for it as they don't tend to fall under the same category as a N/A diesel does when it comes to flow. On a turbo diesel you don't even need a muffler and as long as you get that bigger diameter pipe you will feel the benefits of greater power and even better sound. Make sure you install a muffler because you will need it for inspection. If you don't like the idea of having a muffler just get a performance muffler and you'll never regret having it after you first hear the sound of your truck. It sure sounds sweet when you first hear it and I always liked the sound right after you shift out of 3rd gear into 4th gear (about 40-45 mph). Good luck with your truck and let us know if you end up getting a system installed. Post back your opinions on it too.
