Hello from Australia. I have a 1980 chevy luv diesel sitting in my garage. I have slowly fixed it up. Today it decided to pack it in. It seems to not be glowing.
What usually happens when i start it up is.
I turn it onto glow. I hear a loud click that means it is starting to glow.
A few seconds later i hear another loud click that means its finished glowing and is now all good to start.

What has started happening is.
I turn it onto glow and i hear the first click that means it has started glowing then immediatly after the first click i hear the second click that syas its finished glowing.

There used to be maybe a 5 second gap between the clicks but now they are straght after each other.. When i try and crank it over, nothing happens. just makes a loud clicking noise that lasts as long as i try and crank it.

any help would be appreciated because next week i want to get a roadworthy and a registration certificate.

Also my indicators dont work but my hazzard lights do. any ideas?

Cheers,
Philip

The most probable cause is that you have one or more glow plugs burned out. The Isuzu Glow Control Module for the C223 engine senses the glow current and when it has declined to a certain low level the controller will shut off the current completely.

A fault of this method is that if one or more plugs are burned out the current will already be too low and the controller will think that they are hot enough and shut the remaining good plugs off immediately. Which, of course, means that you cannot start your engine even though you still have three good glow plugs.

The glow current normally starts very high and then quite rapidly declines to about 10 amps per plug, giving 40 amps total if all the plugs are good. This happens because the resistance element in the plugs has a positive temperature coefficient, meaning that the resistance goes up as the plugs get hot.

Thing to do is remove the bus bar from the glow plugs and use an ohmmeter or continuity tester on each plug individually to see if it is good. The normal resistance of a plug is low, around 0.2 or 0.3 ohms.

One other possibility is that the high current wiring to the relay is bad or has corroded connectors. These connectors are used to insert a protective fusible link into the battery feed.

Hope this helps and is not too much 'stuff'.

Paul

Hate to say it, but kinda sounds like a dead battery. Even if the voltage seems OK, have a local shop do a load test. If your battery is OK, check your battery cables and ground wire.

Yeah! After all that stuff I gave you above, Ben may be right . Check the battery and then go back to my first post if you need to.

Paul

On our red auto it was getting hard to start (not doing the tipical CLICKing that yours was doin') But was just hard to start, so I drove the LUV to school and my dad checked it out and it was just a bad connection to the glow relay.

Thanks for the help guys. Ben was correct. The battery has died in the ass. need to get a new one. Glad it was that and not the other problem that turbo paul suggested.

Now i just have to sort out the indicator problem and then im all set and can leave my 240sx in the garage and drive the luv to work during the week.

Cheers guys
