I tried to attach a .jpg picture that explains this but it would not work. I’ve got a ’81 Diesel 4 Wheel Drive and here are the steps from a Chev Shop manual.
Hope this helps.
1. Check the rocker arm shaft bolts for looseness and re-tighten as necessary before adjusting the valves. Torque is 9 to 17 foot pounds.
2. Bring either #1 or #4 piston to top dead center on the compression stroke by turning the crankshaft until timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with the pointer.(Viewing the engine from the front, the notch on the LEFT(of crankshaft pulley) is the correct one-TDC-)
3. Adjust Specs are… Cold 0.016 in------Hot 0.015 inch for BOTH Intake and Exhaust
4. Adjust as described below when Cyl 1 is at top dead center
Cyl #1 Exh and Intake,- Cyl #2 Intake,- Cyl #3 Exh, -#4- No Adj
5. Rotate engine 360 degrees( to bring #4 to TDC) align the marks, and adj as follows:
Cyl #1 No Adj - #2 Exh, --Cyl #3 Intake,- Cyl #4 Intake and Exh.
You might want to draw this out on paper before doing.
