Im kinda thinking about getting seriouse about a 2.2L swap into my 80. I just whanted to know things like gearing and fuel millage. My 80 has 4.10s and 28" tires so at 60mph im turning about 3,000rpm whith my 1.8L. I dont think i would like winding a diesel out that high. And also would hood clearnace be an issue. My dad said that when he bought this truck the deisel was an option, but he bought it in late 1980 so he might have been looking at an 81 modle year. Well anyway thanks.

Well, it's an awsome engine to tell ya the truth, i've been through some crap ith mine but nothing that has permenatly ruined the motor, and it can take a woopin' let me tell ya...

with a 5 speed and 3.73 rear your looking at about 37-41 mpg, now if you put the diesel in your truck with those 4.10 gears, forget that mileage, it'll be 27 mpg... crappy ain't it and it's what our new truck gets but it's auto-matic w/ no overdrive so that might be the problem. Now the 4 speed diesel and gas luvs came with like a 3.4_ rear or something like that, you'd probably have a great time with that rear and a few intake/exhaust mods to compensate for the rear being higher.

Headers would be a great idea but no one makes one for the motor and would have to be custom (but don't we all want our trucks custom?). if you do get a diesel get a 84+, it's got a larger exhaust manifold but if you get a lower year one then try to get ahold of the larger manifolds.

Milage on the motor really isn't a problem seeing as how our 84 pup has 300k on it and could probably beat my truck off the line and it seems like it has a little more power to it.

anything else???

humm i was kinda afraid of need the whole drive train out of a deisel. Looks like ill need the tranny and third members out of it huh.
You perty much covered the big stuff but i think im going to hold off, i was hoping to use my 4speed and 4.10s just lift it more and put bigger tires on it to compensate but 27mpg isnt much better than what im getting now(24).

The C223T turbo diesel in the 86 Trooper uses the same 4.56 axle ratio as the gas model. The factory repair book shows it that way at least. Perhaps they make up for it with the trans. Good luck finding a diesel Trooper though, not common and pretty spendy when you find them usually. If you are going to go diesel, the turbo would be a nice plus to have.

I'd say don't be so quick to pass up the offer on dropping in the 2.2 diesel. I think you'll get 27 mpg in the truck if you're hard on it all the time, but should be more like a 31 or 32 mpg rating when driving conservative. The good thing is you have the last year (in a 1980 model) before they came out with 1981 4x4 diesel trucks and you have the 4.10 gearing. A 1981 4x4 diesel has 4.10 gearing just like your 1980 4x4. I really think if you drop in the diesel you'll see 30+ mpg. And if you drop in the diesel adding 30" tires would help with the low gearing. Unfortunately, you can't just use your existing 4-speed transmission on the diesel because the starter is mounted on the driver's side for the diesel (as opposed to the passenger's side on the gasoline). The only thing you really can do is take the internals of the gas transmission and install them in a diesel transmission case (it is basically a bolt-in job). But if it were me, I would just go buy a used 4-speed diesel transmission if you don't already have the trans bolted with the engine. If you could fit 31" or 32" tires that would be sweet too. I know the truck would look nice being 4WD and rockin' those off-road size tires on.
