where would be the best place to put a magnetic block heater on a 1981 luv diesel 4x4.

on the oil pan if you can because heat rises!!!!!!

Honestly? From everything I've read about them, the best place would be back in the box it came out of and to the store for a refund.

I'm in several different forums, mostly diesel, and anyone who has ever posted about them for cold weather didn't like them at all, as they are too weak heat-wise to work well.

In-line coolant heaters or block heaters seem to be the best ones. I have both in my Sonoma (which has the same motor as your truck), so I can heat up quickly when needed.

Just my 2¢. I've never tried one myself.

yeah thats the best option... personally if i were to go with a bolck heater i'd use a freeze plug style. they're a lot more dependable
