Hey how's it going?
just stumbled over this site trying to find info on my trucks engine....well now I'm hooked and am now on the hunt for a LUV...but untill that pans out I have a question.
The truck I have now is a 84 S-15 with the 2.2l isuzu diesel, over the past 2 years I've found out it wasn't a very popular engine for the first generation s-series and specific info is hard to come by even the mechanics repair manual is listed as a rare book (finaly got one though) as far as I know it's the same engine that is in chev LUV's now the point of my question is.... how much engine noise is there supposed to be with this engine?
I know all diesels have a tick from the valve lash but mine sounds like grandpa's old clacking tractor and way louder than any of the newer 6+ liter trucks. A buddy of mine has a 83 Toyota with a diesel and by comparison his is reletivly quiet. is this just the engine design or is there something I should be looking to fix. I should add it's been running like a clock for 2 years without a problem short of the engine noise. :?:

The Isuzu 2.2 diesel engine is pretty loud when it idles. It would be considerably louder than most new diesels in the case that they are much more advanced and the manufacturer tries to cut the noise down. I would say if the engine has been running good for 2 years than there is no problem. How many miles do you have on the engine/truck? Right after you start this diesel up, pop the hood, and then rev the engine with the injection pump lever you will notice that it is pretty darn loud. I know a little bit about Toyota diesels and I would say your friend's 83 diesel is going to be a quieter than the Isuzu diesel. Also, I want to say you have a rare truck with the diesel GMC S15, I don't even hardly see S10 diesels let alone a S15 diesel. Do you have a 4 or 5 speed transmission? I have a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel and am currently taking out a no good transmission and need to find a replacement. I know the S10/S15 diesel had a GM transmission, while the LUV/PUP had an Isuzu transmission. What I need to do is get a tougher trans because this would be the 3rd trans to go into my truck.

There is a forum over at 4x4wire devoted to Isuzu diesels that might have some useful info for ya. Go to:
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/postlist. ... oard=UBB74
Be sure to scroll to the bottom and set it to display posts active from all dates. I think the default is 2 weeks, and there is a lot of posts going back a long ways before that. They are more aimed at Isuzu rigs, but I'm sure they'd be more than happy to discuss motor topics on S10/S15s. Heck, if there are some other options for interchange of parts besides just Isuzus they might be thrilled to hear from ya. :)

On the trans, I don't know for sure, but perhaps Isuzu beefed up the trans some when they went to the C223 Turbo diesel motor. I know the C223 and C223T motors are basically the same except the turbo was added, so the newer trans should bolt up to the motor. Drivelines and clutch parts may be different though.
