Hi I have a 1982 chevy luv with the 2.2l diesel it runs great but in the morning I have to pour diesel fuel in the throtle body to crank it in the morning and also after the truck has set for over 3 hours you have to do it again to crank it. What is wrong with it? I hope someone knows whats wrong.

Glow plugs need changed? Or perhaps the injector pump is getting too weak to supply the engine with fuel for the initial startup. After it is running, and the pump is spinning faster, it will sustain the engine. Just a thought.

I have had at least 5 different 2.2 diesel pickups with the same problem. They are hard to start in the morning when they are cold. The answer for me has been one of two things. First I would replace all four glow plugs for total of cost of less than $40.00. Secondly, I would check to see if the proper voltage is being sent to the glow plugs. As the wires get older, they seem to break down in the joints, and do not carry the proper voltage.
This is what has worked for me in solving the poor voltage running to the glow plugs. As you face the front of the engine, look to your left for the positive post wire on the battery. There are two smaller wires that run off of this. What I have done, is to cut out all of the joints that connect this wire together and replace with a slightly heavier gauge wire. This has allowed the proper voltage to run to the 4 glow plugs and prepare the motor to start on the coldest of days.

According to my 1982 Chevy LUV factory shop manual it says the standard for the glow plugs is 8-9 volts. When you turn the starter switch on, glow plug relay #1 should make a clicking noise within 5 to 9 seconds. So if your glow plugs are reading a 6.25 I would change all 4 of them.

The glow plugs are located on the same side as the injectors. Will be the left side of the engine, after you would pop the hood and look at it. The glow plugs are somewhat near the injectors as they come up from the injection pump. Hope that helps you out.

My best guess is the glow plug controller or one of your relays is bad. How is the condition on all your glow plugs? If any of the glow plugs are reading under 8-9 volts, all four should be replaced.

2 things...

1 2.2l don't have a throttle body, they just have a huge hole in the manifold under the aircleaner...

2 you could buy a block heater and just plug it up the night b4... i did that last winter when the snow was a foot high and mine cranked w/o a prob.
