hello all, I have problem with my truck??? When the truck is moving it makes a metal on metal (rubbing noise) towards the back of the truck. I have also noticed from time to time a u-joint popping to. Not sure what it could be?????? :?: :?: :? :? :?

It could be that carrier bearing as well as the ujoints. Most of us 1980 and older LUV guys don't have that sort of setup (except the longbeds), but you should have 3 u-joints under there. One at the trans, one just rear of the bearing, and one at the rear end. Get under there and see if any of the have a lot of excess wiggle, and check the carrier bearing for slop as well. The bearing might move some in the support it sits in, so look closely at it to see what is moving. If it is a u-joint it is likely one that will be more sloppy than the others.

Also look for up/down or side/side slop in the rear end shaft. When the pinion bearing goes on the rear end it can make some serious amounts of grinding noise that might come and go depending on if you are accelerating, deccelerating, or cruising level. If you see a big bunch of gear oil all over around the rear end, that is probably where the problem lies.

When you pull the driveline you should be able spin the driveline and feel any grinding if any from the carrier bearing.

the noise came from the bearing between your gearbox and the u joint, it hold the shaft. Have a nice day.

I don't think so, but anything is possible. It doesn't make the noise anymore so i think i got it. I am due for a back brake job soon. :)
