I want to get my '81 LUV diesel 5-speed back on the road...it has been
sitting for a few years. I parked it a year or two after having the engine
overhauled, including the injectors and injection pump, because it just
smoked too much...partial throttle acceleration produced modest smoke,
but flooring it produced thermo-nuclear clouds of smoke...unacceptable.
How are the rest of you getting along with your LUV diesels?

I have a 1985 s-10 with the 2.2L Diesel (yes it came that way from the factory)
It spokes like a dead indian (really bad like you menched)

When I bought my 1981 Luv a year ago, it didn't smoke at all, I now can see it in my rearview mirror as I go though the gears.

Question, you say yours has a 5 speed? Did it come that way or did you add it.
My s-10 has a 5-speed, but it is only 2wheel drive my luv is a 4 speed and was wondering if I could put a 5 speed in my luv with the transfercase. I do know that the luv has a mechanical clutch and my s-10 has a hydraulic. If I could find another 5 speed I would install it in my luv,

Woody, actually for your LUV, since it's a 4-speed, I would keep the 4-speed instead of installing a 5-speed. This is the reason, the 5-speed transmission isn't as tough as the 4-speed they put in the 4x4's. I have a 1982 LUV diesel, and before I got the truck, it was my dads and he used it as a work truck. I still remember, the original 5-speed transmission blew at about 140,000 miles. Then he parked it for about 2 years. And when I asked him if I could have the truck, he said it needed a trans, so we were lucky to find a 5-speed trans to replace the one that blew. So far the trans has been great and no problems. But my dad just recently bought a 1981 LUV Mikado diesel 4x4 and it has the 4-speed. He told me that this trans is way better than the 5-speed. But if you are looking for an extra gear then I can understand. Just wanted to give you some info. Also, I know that LUVs are cable cluctch and my friend used to have a 1992 Chevy S10 that had a hydraulic clutch. What I didn't know was that an S10 diesel has a hydraulic cluctch, but has the same motor as what LUVs have, but the LUV has a cable cluctch. Wow! That is real cool. Oh yea and do you have any pictures of your S10 diesel?

I bought my diesel when it had 30,000 miles. It came with the 5-speed
trans, which exhibited a rough input shaft bearing at about 70,000...
replaced that and have had no trouble since. As for the smoke, it was
always there, got worse before overhaul at 90,000 and was bad after
the overhaul, too. I recall being told once that the injection pump has
a bushing or a sleeve that gets worn and causes overfueling, but since
the pump was gone through I would assume that had been corrected/
replaced. Of course, like they say, ASSUMPTION IS THE MOTHER OF
ALL SCREW-UPS!

I do have images of my Diesel S-10, but they are on my home computer. I will try to find time to get you some images. I am not sure how many Diesel S-10s were made, but I have never seen another one.

Guest, First is the smoke black, blue or white? If it is black, this might be a condition that could be adjusted with the injector pressure adjustment screw. This is located at the back of the injector pump, it has a locknut and is saftey wired. ADJUSTMENTS must be in very small increments! After removing the saftey wire and loosening the locknut, turn the adjusting screw only a quarter of a turn or less counterclockwise. retighten the locknut and give it a try. Depending on the results of your test drive, you might want to reduce injector pressure even more (counterclockwise) or if the engine had reduced power, you could increse the injector pressure by turning the adjusting in a clokwise.
If the smoke is blue you could have an oil control problem (rings or valve seals) and there isn't much adjusting for that.
Before starting any injector pressure adjustment I recommend have a shop manual with pictures and diagrams handy.
Good Luck Fitzworld

Black smoke, big time. I will try your ideas, though it will be a week or
so before I get to it...too many other things going right now. I do have
access to a GM shop manual for the LUV diesel.
