Hi Y'all,

I read the other "1980 conversion" thread and will be reading Eric's 75 conversion thread next.

But first,
can you identify this motor? the 2.2 or the 1.8?

I attached the pics.

My story:
I have a 80 4x4 LUV and got a parts truck, a 79 4x4 diesel conversion that looks like shit but the motor, tranny, and transfer case runs. it drives.
I'm hoping to just have to swap the motor, but it seems like if it's the 2.2 I will have to swap tranny and xfer case too (because bolt pattern on 4sp tranny is diff?).
After I read Eric's conversion thread I will post other questions I have here, but first I'd like to know if any of yall can ID my diesel motor : )

thank you!

That's a 2.2L C223. If it's with the original radiator, I'd say it's a 1984 or 1985.
The box on the back of the valve cover, with hoses on it--that's a feature that came in '84.
In '86, they got a smaller filler neck. The radiator looks like it has the larger cap, which means it's pre-1986 if I'm right.

Wonderful, thank you.

Now I am wondering how I can find out the differential gear ratio on the diesel and on my gasser... its not written on there.

I have no idea if the radiator is stock or not....

The diesel would have had 4.10 diffs if it was 4x4. I don't know about the '79 and '80 trucks, but someone here should know.

Project is well under way!

I am wondering if I need to change out fuel lines for the diesel?
and if I can keep the electric fuel pump next to the tank? Or do I need to upgrade it for a thicker fuel?
thank you!!

(Sorry I tried searching for the answer but couldn't find it)

All 4x4s came with 4.10 gears

I'd change the fuel lines just because they're old. Any fuel line leak will cause the truck to run really badly, if it even runs at all.

These diesels don't require a fuel pump, other than the injection pump on the engine.

Hey folks!! new question, couldn't find the answer by searching.

So everything's workin ok with the diesel and ive put about 600 miles on it. :)

but still haven't figured out how to get a diesel nozzle in the hole meant for the gas nozzle.
so i've been putting a few gallons in at a time and i'm getting really bored of that.

What have other folks done when they've done a 1st gen conversion?
should i drill the whole bigger??
orr....???

thanks!!

I may have an extra diesel filler neck, but I'm not sure if you'd need it, and not sure it would even fit the 1st gen bed. Maybe someone else who's done the conversion can help, as you requested. But I'll ask around anyway.

thanks jack. maybe I should even post this on your site cuz its more active.
I wonder if there's any way we could know that your extra filler next would or wouldn't fit? (before I have it in my hands)

I was also wondering what "that box with the hoses" on top of the motor is.
my alternator is apparently from the 81-83 motor...? according to dart sq. confusing!
I obviously need to buy a manual :)

Besides the box on top of the valve cover with hoses (it's an oil separator, by the way)--
There was another change in '84. The oil filter base is rounded on '81-'83 engines, and square on the '84-'87 engines. The '84 and later engines got a larger oil filter that's not interchangeable with earlier ones.

The exhaust manifolds were changed (improved) in later years but I don't recall the exact year. Supposedly freed up a couple HP's. Jack can you clarify?

Tom, that was '83--the manifold outlet got enlarged.

Great to hear of another 1st gen diesel Luv!!

I'm still using the stock gas filler neck but our local station has a diesel pump for cars and light trucks.

Keep in mind that if you switch to a diesel filler neck that you'll need to use a basically impossible to find diesel fuel cap. If you enjoy the sound of crickets chirping, try posting "Need a diesel fuel cap".

Tom, do you need one? When I had one spare, I wasn't willing to part with it. Now I have two (one came with the bed I bought).
