I was on here a year ago asking the same question, but my truck still won't start! Pretty much I pulled the motor last year and replaced a bunch of stuff and I've been doing everything I can think of sense...replaced glow plugs, starter selonoid, had starter tester(it's good) battery is new and good. Usually it will crank over but won't start. Any ideas?

The only things left for a diesel to run would be make sure it's getting fuel and air.

We probably should have just continued the original conversation on this topic, so we could easily see what's already been tried. That topic is at viewtopic.php?f=14&t=25901

In that topic, you were going to check some stuff and reply back. You didn't.

Someone asked if the timing belt had been changed. You said it had not. The point of the question was not really about whether the timing belt was new, but whether it was removed. Whenever the timing belt comes off, you have the risk of getting the crank, cam, and pump out of sync. You said you'd installed a "head set". There's no way to do that without removing the timing belt. I have a STRONG suspicion it was not reinstalled properly, and something is out of sync. That's where I'd start investigating.

Ben (if you're looking), it might be good to just merge these two topics.

I can't remember if I did anything to the timing...it's been a year and a half so I cant remember much. But it may have. Today I was working on it and found the throtle wasnt hooked up correctly. Now thats fixed but we had it running on Either. bad idea i know. but it wouldn't turn off. Im guessing problem with throtle. But thats fixed. If it was running for say 15 sec would that tell me if the timing was off or just mess stuff up?

Running it on either won't tell you if the timing is off. I strongly recomend not running a diesel on that stuff. You said you replaced the head set, if so then the timing may be off. Start by verifying if it is correct.

Please go back and RE-read my last post if you want help. You took the head off, that means the timing belt came off. I'm TRYING to tell you, that's probably where your problem is. It's behaving exactly as expected when one of the pulleys is off by a tooth or two.

And listen carefully to Luvrv8, he's telling you the facts--you should not run it on ether. If you KNOW it's a bad idea, but you insist on running it on ether, I have to wonder if you really want this fixed. :?: He's also saying the same thing I am--when he says your timing is off, he's talking about the timing belt installation being incorrect. That's where you need to start looking.

Yep, I watched my dad use Ether to get our diesel started when I was a kid. He had changed the fuel filter and didn't want to reprime the injector pump.

Instead he got to replace two head gaskets, and then reprime the system anyway.

Do you know exactly what you're looking for? If not, ask here. Hopefully before you go to the trouble of looking.

Well it runs now! I don't know what it took to get it goin, my grandpa did it while I was at work. But I guess I'm still having an issue with my throttle.

It would sure be helpful to know what he did.

Can you be a little more specific?

Jack,

I know I'm late to the party here, but since the post is still relevant I need to clarify something. On our C223 diesels the head can be pulled without ever taking the timing belt off. The camshaft and timing pump are all in or on the block, therefore no need to get it out of time just to change the head gasket. The hardest thing to get to is the oil line on the back of the head.

Mark
