I am looking to buy a cheap Chevy Luv just for its body. I was wanting to then put a diesel engine in it! What is the best year to get, will a cummings 3.9 diesel engine fit in there? could I be able to hook up an allison transmission to it? And then add the Insta trac 4X4 push button that the newer s-10's have? Is this all a big dream or is it possible? Can someone answer this?

Anything is possible with money and fabrication skills.

Awesome! I just need someone in Oregon that has some fabrication skills! If it were you would you put the 3.9 Cummings in it out of all the diesel engines out there?

Yes, anything is possible. But the 3.9 is too big, and too heavy for this to be practical. You'd have an easier time getting the Isuzu 4JB1-T or 4JG-T engine in it, and that would require about 2" of body lift.

Ok is there any diesel that will give it good power and also gas mileage, newer engine that can fit in it standard without a body lift kit?

Agreed. That's the C223 diesel that was used in the 2nd-gen LUV and Isuzu P'up. It's 2.23 liters. In naturally aspirated form, it puts out 58-60 hp and should be expected to get 35 mpg with a 3.73 rear end. Don't let the HP number deceive you, because the torque is pretty good. Add a turbo (somewhat risky to the connecting rods) and power goes up.

There's also the slightly smaller 4FB1, a 1.8L OHC engine. It's only 50 HP, but it revs higher than the C223 (5,000 RPM redline vs. about 4,200 on the C223). It's an easier swap because the motor will bolt right up to the typical gas transmissions (4-speed or 5-speed). It should get slightly better fuel economy than the C223.

Sweet thanks for both replies, that helps out a lot! Does anyone on this Chevy Luv thread live in Oregon? Near Portland?
