what would that black box like thing that runs to the air intake from almost the front be? what is it for? is it necessary? thanks in advance. 81 2.2 diesel luv

I am not sure, I think it has cork in it? My 1985 s-10 with the 2.2L dosen't have that box just a duct running from the front support behing the grill. It is pre formed and looks Race.
