Last weekend I was flushing the cooling system of my 82 diesel long bed and as I expected the heater, the heater hose and the hose to the oil filter base were all clogged with orange muddy rust. This required the removal of all of these hoses and the heater core. The hose comming from the back of the oil filter thats connects to the steel tube above the intake had an inline themostat in it. This item had to be removed with the hose as it was filled with this rusty sludge and after cleaning it and replacing the hoses, I don't know which way to install the 'stat'. Would it be right side up or up side down or is it even needed.
Thanks for any help
Fitzworld

John, I gues I didn't explain things well enough bu I don't have any problem with the engine themostat, it is installed correctly and keeps the motor at 185 degrees, The inline 'stat' is kind of spliced in to the hose
coming from the base of the oil filter and goes behind the motor , connecting to a steel tube that runs on top of the intake. This themostat
only controls the flow of coolant through the base of the oil filter and I just need to know which direction the coolant flows at the oil filter base,
does the flow come from the head to the filter or does the flow go from the steel tube on the manifold to the filter base an return to the head?
So if I knew the flow path, I could place the spring part toward the flow, because in this application 'spring up or spring down' do not apply.
Thanks for responding and any help. Fitzworld

I will be replacing my heater core this weekend due to it clogging. I have been running with out a thermostat since June. I just got a used heatercore and dreading the procedure. I have never change one but I am sure I can handle it. Any pointers. This will be on an 1981 Luv 4x4 2.2L Diesel.

I have some questions
Did you ever figure out which way it goes?

I was going through all my coolent hoses to make sure they were clean when I changed my heater core and found that the the inline thrermostat was clogged bad (like sludge rusty junk packed in like mud). Why does the coolent run to the oil filter base? is it to cool the coolent or warm the oil?

Can I just bypass the inline thermostat? or do I have to use it. I am not sure mine will work since it is really rusty, were can I get a new one if I need to run it.

Also does anyone know of or heard of using a filter on the cooling system? I realy do not want to blow up another heater core it was a real pain to replace it.
I think they use them on big rigs?

Woody, Thanks for checking back on this. Yes, I did get it figured out
Seems that the flow is out from the head to the oil filter casting, then to
the themostat, so I installed it with the spring to the heat source and
it has been performing well.
