I know this is'nt exactly luv related. But the s10 forum I am a member of does'nt have much info on diesels, plus I may do the same to my luv one day.... I want to put a cummins 4bt in my 88 s10 blazer (or if you have any idea's for any other good diesel for a 4wd let me know), and I know there are some with better injector pumps for horse power and such. So I thought I would see what info y'all could give me. Thanks -Josh

Go with a 4bd1-t or 4bd2-t. They put out pretty good hp and torque and are easy to double the stock power. Plus they have adapter plates to mate them with any SBC transmission like th-350 4L60E etc. etc. In a LUV you have to put at least a 2" body lift for it to fit with the hood closed and I think the cummins 4bt you would actually have to raise more because the exhaust goes over the engine. But I'm not 100% sure on all that for a S10 Blazer. You should just go with a SBC. Or if you really want to go for it go for a 4he1 or a 6bd1-t 8O

Just my $.02

If you don't want to do a body lift, the 4JB1-T (and 4JG2-T) should fit. They're closer to the weight and size of the original engine. Power is about twice that of the diesel LUVs--about 105 hp for the 4JB1-T and about 120 hp for the 4JG2-T. If you're familiar with diesels, you already know that the hp numbers don't mean as much as the torque numbers.

Id go with the 4bt Cummins, Older ones have VE pump, and the newer ones have P-pump, they are the better pumps but they are harder to find and you can get more horse out of a p-pump. the 4bt Cummins come both with exhaust up above the engine and below, just most come above the the engine. But you also need to run a different trans to because your stock trans will never take the torque of the 4bt. They make all kinds of adaptors for the 4bt, chevy 4spd chevy torbo 400, or you can go with the dodge trans to, id go to 4btswaps.com and that site will have everythin you need to know, in my mind the 4bt is the better road to take.

A 4bt weigh is about 750pds, most are 105 horse stock, but with almost 300torque. And are easy to get to 250 hp. They have put 4bt in everything from gensets, marine boats, box vans or breed vans, and tractors. And Marine 4bts were stock with 250 hp.

But ether way the 4bt or the 4bd1-t is gona take time and work, and Cost Some Major $$$$. The trans adaptors and the trans are not cheap and a 4bt hard to find depending on where you live.

Read up on the 4btswaps.com its really got all you need to know there, Hours of info on that site. haha 8)

I guess it comes down to "What are you trying to accomplish?". Most of the 4JB1-T and 4JG2-T engines come from overseas with 5-speed 4wd transmissions still attached.

Here's a thread from the PlanetIsuzoo.com forum about a recent "group buy" on these engines.

Thanks for all the info, I really like the 4bt and the info about the injector pump was what I was thinking but couldn't remember. My main goal is for my s10 to be diesel solid axle an on 35s. I would be willing to go with other engines but I'm leaning towards the 4bt mainly because I already have a cummins and the 4bt is close to what I know. My luv has a small block right now, I was just contemplating a 4bt hot rod luv in the future if the s10 goes well lol.

What are the 4JB1-T and 4JG2-T like for power? and what do they way? 2 grand sounds like a really good deal for the trans and transfer case to! Thanks really good info joeIsuzu!

The 4bt is a great power plaint, but it just can cost alot. My 4bt was a genset motor, and i have to rebuild it, but i got lucky with mine. I paid 900 for mine, and it needs a rebuild. But 900 for a 2002 4bt ant to bad. but im goin threw diesel school so it shouldnt be to hard. Haha But the main things i like about the 4bt is that right now they are makin so much stuff for them, and you can use like 90% of the 12V cummins parts. My luv is on a ranger frame and they put them in the rangers all the time, and ive read up on most of the problems i will have. When i get goin on my swap, hopfully nexted winter. haha But i gota get my luv runnin with the gaser first. Haha im pretty close to gettin mine done. will kinda, lol if i wasnt painting it i would be. But it should be ready to start get painted in a few weeks! haha

I've heard the power is great, but I don't have first-hand knowledge. I can tell you this--these are the engines that the factory installed in the overseas equivalent of our Troopers, Rodeos, Pickups, and Amigos. SO, the swap should be fairly straighforward as long as you're not putting it into an ECM-equipped vehicle.

It's been one of my long-term dreams to put one of these into either an early Amigo or an '88-'95 SpaceCab...probably 2wd.

Well thats cool!!! An yea anytime you get into ECM stuff you can have unseen problems haha But thats cool!!! and sence there overseas i beat they get better mpg to. most do, do to stronger laws. haha

They 4bt is a great little diesel, but putting it to a normal luv, theres no way. the weight is just to much. I will fit but not the weight. The 4bts weigh about 750 pounds, and add the trans on that to and its over a 1000. Im not sure what luv's weigh but it cant be much and adding that much weigh and your gona have problems.

What also would be cool would be to put a little VW diesel, they put them behind the stock suzuki samurai trans i think, im not sure on that one, but i know they do something to get those vw diesels in and i dont think VW makes a transfer Case here so I shouldnt be talkin about what i dont no. haha But One of them would be cool to, because i know you can build those up some to

The 4JB1 and 4JG2 do not use ECMs. I could not tell if there was any misunderstanding about that--so I wanted to make it clear.

4JB1-T is a 2.8L DI injected I-4
the 2.8 was sold with and with out a inter cooler. HP is from 95 to the 105 area maybe a touch more.
it was sold in isuzu's up tell about the end of gen1 troopers or so 1991.

4JG2-T is a 3.1L IDI injected I-4
this engine was used in newer troopers ECT the 1992 up ones in the states that are 5,500 LBs yielding low/mid 20s in USA miles per gal "not UK gals", with slitly over size tires.
its around 125ish hp.

the 2.8L is a loud engine being DI with no commen rail or HEUI type fuel system, all-though not all computer diesels are quiet.......
but on the flip side, the DI makes it star-able at cold temps with much less effort, it is also a good BIO, WVO, ECT canadate being DI with no computer.

as a general rule, the 2.8 and 3.1 seem to be rather cold running engines reading topeks ive come across over time.

the little 2.2 diesel state side is 125 torque with a turbo at 2,200 rpms

just for compareson reasons

Quote:
Cummins 4BT Specifications:
Engine Name: Cummins B3.9L/4BT
Applications: Chevrolet Step Vans, Commercial applications
Configuration: Inline 4-cylinder diesel
Displacement: 3.9L, 239 cubic inches
Bore: 4.02 inches
Stroke: 4.72 inches
Compression Ratio: 17.5:1
Aspiration: Turbocharged, non-intercooled
Engine Weight: 745 - 782 lbs
Oil Capacity: 10 quarts
Horsepower: 105 hp @ 2,300 RPM *
Torque: 265 lb-ft @ 1,600 RPM *
GVWR: 16,000 lbs
*Common rating, though horsepower & torque ratings may vary by application.

id say the lower torque numbers are in line with the smaller displacement.
0.01C

granted it should be noted,
MAX rpms of the Cummins versus Isuzu engine is "very large".

But it's not a fair comparison anyway (Isuzu 4JB1 or 4JG2 vs. Cummins 4BT). It's like apples to....WATERMELONS.

Either Isuzu engine (4JB1 or 4JG1) could bolt into several Isuzu vehicles, and nobody would know by looking. For a daily driver, that's very practical.

On the other hand, the Cummins 4BT will take a lot of other work (the weight alone requires it). That's fine too, if you're up for a lot of work.

If you want to compare the 4BT to an Isuzu engine, I think the 4BD1 may be a better match. IIRC, it is also 3.9L, and is similar in weight. Incidentally, there ARE transmission adapters available to use this in other vehicles.

Yeah I understand what you're saying, and those engines have some very good qualities, my only concern is even though I probably don't need it I'll want more power.
