i can tell you right now the transmission in the gas luv is different.
the difficulty of the swap depends on your budget and fabrication skills.
whats wrong with the gas 4x4?

either engine would do great.
i like the body on the 72-80 more than the 81-82 personally.
if you pick up the 1980 and its running i would drive it till it dies and swap in the diesel

Some members here have put that engine into the 4x2 LUV. I don't recall anyone doing it with a 4x4. If you do, you will need to get a 4x4 oil pan for the diesel (almost impossible to find), and a 4x4 oil pump. You will need a diesel 4x4 transmission, because the starter bulge is on the opposite side of the diesel engine. Those transmissions are also hard to find. They're also cable-operated clutches. I don't know what kind of clutch is in the '80.

I guess it CAN be done, but you'd have to want it real bad. If they were both 4x4 or both 4x2 it would be MUCH easier.
