I've just recently purchased a 77 luv, and have a friend who is a Cummins diesel mechanic. He has a 2.8 L Cummins Diesel engine sitting around, and says that he'd like to try putting it in my truck. I have no doubt that he could make it work as he's the type of guy who could get a blender to run on a 300 hp diesel engine. My question is if I'd want him to try? Anybody out there ever used a Cummins engine in their luv? How'd it work out? Any thoughts out there?

By the way, I have zero..... I repeat zero experience with diesel engines, so try to keep the lingo simple for this simpleton.

Does the engine have a turbo?
Does he have a transmission to go with it? If not the stock 4 speed would need to be addapted somehow to the Cummins.
If you guys have all the parts, tools, and know how, I think it's a great idea! Good luck.

My friend said that he would know want to put in a five speed manual tranny. If I do this, I'll definitely take some pics. Forgot to ask if there was a turbo on it.

Sounds like a cool project, couple of things to think of is useful gearing (so it isn't screaming all the time), and the weight of the engine itself. It probably weighs a lot more than the gas engine that came in it, which of course means suspension considerations. If no power steering, then you have to steer the beast with extra weight over the front wheels.

Let us know how things go!

Just my 2c.

I hope it is smaller than the common 3.9l engine out of the Frito chip trucks. Those are the 5.9 6 cylinder engines with 2 cylinders cut off. Heavy engines with the turbo pipe going over the valve cover.

International makes a nice engine of that size 2.8l, but it is not sold in the us. It is even known as a powerstroke engine. It is sold by International of Brazil.

No chance of getting it here. It is used for a Land Rover replacement engine but is not legal in the US. A great little engine.

The 1.9 VW TD, TDI can be done using a Toyota based Samurai Swap. I would love to see a small diesel engine that has enough engine speed and horse power - torque that would work. Cost too.

you can get a inported 2.8 or 3.1 isuzu diesel for around $2,500 or $4,000 with the hole half cut of the frunt end (a trooper) about 100hp~ mabe a little more.

the 2.8 is not computer ized and is DI,
the 3.1 is computer ized and is IDI

there for sale on E-bay all the time.
a body lift will be needed to put one of these engines in a LUV or PUP though not a trooper.
i have only seen them with a 4x4 trans though some are auto.
and all are T\D that i have seen.

8O the Cummins 3.9L or isuzu NPR 3.9L engines are about 400LBs or more to much 8O
