Hey all,

I've been having alot of issues with my glow plugs lately. To start off, I've got an '82 Diesel LUV with about 200K original on it. I've never done that much work on it so...my knowledge base is fairly limited. Problems started about 5 months ago, when it was still winter. I was climbing a huge mountain with a full load (almost 1000Lbs) in the back (which was not that great of an idea when i look back on it), but I over-heated and somehow managed to blow the glowplugs when that happened. Since then, I've replace the relay and controller and gone through about 3 sets of glow plugs. The last set went out a week ago. So, running to the end of my patience I decided that I was just going to rewire the plugs with a manual switch. I know that the plugs are 5v which brings me to my first problem. I know i can put 12v from the battery to them for 3 -4 seconds, but there is a huge possibility of them blowing out again. That is the exact problem I'm trying to avoid. Any ideas on how I can convert the 12v into 5v?

My first though was a voltage regulator, but I can't find any technical specs on common voltage regulators. I am a somewhat handy DIY guy, So if you've got any (I mean ANY) ideas, I'd LUV to hear them.

Also, I'm in the market for some replacement parts. So if you know of anywhere in Oregon where i can get some without too much hassle it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

---NeedLUV for my LUV

Chrysler style ballast resistors convert 12v to 6v...

Originally that glow plug system came with a drop-down resistor to warm the glow plugs safely from 12v, AFTER an initial direct 12v for a few seconds of warming (controlled by the controller, which also sensed engine temp and adjusted itself accordingly).
I ran them directly for years in my first diesel truck, and never went over a "one thousand 3" count. Except once, when I ended up frying them. However, no longer than 3 seconds manually SHOULD be safe (as I said, it worked for me).
Currently I use 10.5 v ones from a reefer with a modified controller, but the wait is a annoyance, compared the much quicker 5v ones. But it works.

We have several glowplug threads over at IsuzuPup.com, as well as parts for sale. You may want to pop in over there as well as here. There are LOTS of members in Oregon, too.

Sorry i don't have a fix for ya. I just replaced my glow plugs $23 each. i was wondering if there are torque specs for them.I am having to hit the key 5 times or more to get it to start, otherwise it just turns over with white smoke from tailpipe.

Thanks for any help here.

Fuel vapor.

There's a guy on eBay who is apparently parting out a diesel P'up or LUV, and he's selling the glow system piece by piece. You may want to take a look, he recently listed the controller. Often, it's just a bad connection, though.
