I have a 81 Diesel Mikado, the truck runs great and has been a good work horse for a year or so. The transmission is making a lot of noise and when I drained the oil there was a few pieces of metal. I guess I need to rebuild the transmission. I could really do with some help or does any know where I could get this done, I am in northern California. How hard is it to remove the transmission? I think I may of found a used one from from a 1984 1.9 gas pup, would this work? I would think the first couple of gears would be different. Any help would be great as I would like to get the truck back on the road without spending too much cash

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it was a 2004 gas 1.9 P'up?

The transmission from the 1.9 is not going to fit because the starter is on the wrong side of the bell housing. It MIGHT fit if you split the front half (the bell housing) off and use the one from your diesel. But for some reason, I'm thinking it had a hydraulic clutch rather than cable-operated. If so, that would require quite a bit of work. The best option is to get one from an '86-'94 2.3 engine. The ones before '86 were prone to failure. Details for that upgrade are on the IsuzuPup.com site:
Transmission Upgrade for '81-'87 5-speeds

The 1.9 is has the cable for the clutch. It will work if You use the front part of the diesel's tranny. Make sure to use 5w30 motor oil in the tranny when done putting it back together.

And it must be a 5-speed. The 4-speed transmissions won't bolt up to a diesel bellhousing.
