Hello there I have a 1981 LUV, is a diesel with the 4x4, is my daily driver but it has develop a problem and I'm not sure how to diognose it, basically what is going on is that the power does not seem to get to the wheels, it can barely clim a small hill, the engine rebs up, but the truck will move slow, I have no smoke out of the exust, I'm thinking it might have blown the clutch, as maybe the engine is just spinning, does any one have any ideas as to how I can go about diognosing this problem ( I'm thinking is the clutch but I really want to know what is wrong before I tear it apart) here is what I have done so far

changed the fuel and air filter.

when I took the air filter off seems that truck was really loud, could this indicate a broken exust valve, ?? since I have no smoke of any kind out the exust I'm thinking that is not the head gasket, if you folks could brain storm on this I would really apriciated ...

How do you diognose a bad clutch...

Andy

Hello,
To answer your question it does sound like the clutch has gone bad. There is only 1 test you can do and it may not even work. There are 2 nuts tightened together on the clutch cable near the firewall/beside the brake booster. Loosen the 2 nuts and adjusted some slack out of the cable. This will allow whatever clutch material that might be left on the friction disc to possibly drive the transmission. If the truck now pulls better than you know without a doubt that the clutch needs to be replaced.
When you replace the clutch it's going to be a big job. The tranny won't just unbolt and drop out from under the truck. The front diff is so close the oil pan that there isn't any room to move the engine around for the tranny to drop out. When the tranny is pulled back toward the rear diff it hits against the cross member. The only way I found to replace the clutch in my Luv was to lower and remove the front diff assembly which requires all steering linkage/suspension componets to be removed/seperated. (Man thats a lot of work). I've also heard if the cab is unbolted from the chassis and lifted up about 3" that this will provide enough room for the tranny to clear that cross member and is then able to be lowered out from underneath the truck. Either way is a lot of work. I just replaced the clutch in my Luv not to long ago and you can tell which direction I took. Hope any of this helps.
Mike.

This is an 80/81 with a diesel. Is the clutch cable in the same spot on the 2nd gen LUV?

Well I now know what I'm in for, I will look for the adjustments on the firewall tommorow and see if adjusting them will give the clutch more bite, if so I know my problem, I'm sure the cable for the clutch is on the left side, as you look forward, I am not sure how that relates to other models...

thanks for the info ..

all the 80/81 LUVs and 80/87 pup diesels are a cable clutch.

though the 86/87 CAL spec pups, had a MSG-5 hyd oprated clutch, and a EGR systom.
its a real odd ball systom, theres some pics of one on pup.com

Here is the status I got under the truck and as it turns out looks like the fire wall is cracked, there is a crack that starts at the brake cilinder and goes al the way past the cluths pedal mounts so I'm thinking with the pedal floating the clutch is out of alingment, I have never seen anything like this, I'm not sure how to go about fixing the fire wall...

any ideas ???

Thanks
