Its a 81LUV short bed 4spd manual 4wd with AC, PS and isuzu 2.2L N\A diesel

what in the world is it

The Energizer Bunny is trying to keep up, and is starting to gasp for air!!

It's a fuel vapor recovery tank. It lives in that cover on the front right of the bed and it goes to the gas tank and 1 hose goes to that valve on the passenger side firewall that t's off to the oil pan and air cleaner onh a gas engine, not sure where it ends up on a diesel. It's a emission thing, yes even diesels have emissions.

I believe your answer, but I don't believe that part was on any of the diesels (except possibly the CA version). I think more likely, the truck was originally a gasser, later retrofitted with a diesel. That's why the owner found it disconnected.

I have never seen a LUV diesel with the vapor canister but several trucks I work on have them that are diesels.
