all depends on the maintenance that has been performed...I would say most diesels can get at least 300k no problems...oil puffing out at start up is burning oil that has dripped down from most likely bad rings

i would say the maintenance has not been great, i don't know much about the history except for the past two years and these folks haven't treated it well

Mine puffed black smoke due to timing problems caused by a bad Cold Start Device (a very common problem with these engines). After I removed the CSD, I have quite a bit less smoke.

If you buy it, change the timing belt IMMEDIATELY if you're not certain it has been done in the last 60k miles. I'm not particularly great with mechanical stuff, but I did mine in about 3-4 hours.

I don't think you mentioned the price. These trucks, depending on condition, go anywhere from about $1,200 to around $5,000. Occasionally, one will go higher than that, but it has to be in near mint condition.

The black smoke you are referring to is common and nothing to worry about and actually that is a good sign as if it were blowing blue smoke then a further investigation would need done welcome to the world of diesels.

Also keep in mind that dsl 4x4 4speed is no freeway machine. With stock 411's 60 mph tops.

A little black smoke at startup and when accelerating and going up steep hills is the norm. W

e call em soot-farts.

How much is being asked and what kind of shape? Location would help too.

You have already been given some really good advice, but I would like to mention again that these are not freeway machines!! Going up any hill you are going to be slowing down and putting out a lot of black smoke.
Don't know where you live, but don't ever try to drive from LA to Las Vegas and back!! You will probably get ran over, and definetly be most unpopular! You will also be given the No 1 finger salute on all the hills!!

Good advice to change the timing belt, also adjust the valves as soon as possible!! I have not found one yet that didn't need a good valve adjustment, it is easy, in-expensive and a very good investment, in engine noise, in mileage, and especially in performance.

Good luck,

Black smoke is fuel. Look at all the hopped up diesel trucks.. My sons dodge 12v cummins (no computer) has the pump turned up a little. It will smoke if you get on it and a little when you first start it.
White smoke is usually oil.

I agree with the above postings.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.
