I found a 80 something chevy chevette diesel motor with 5-speed. I'm thinking about buying it but first I have some questions. First question is, can the motor/trans be swapped in a 80'4wd I already have? I'm asking because I don't know about the transfercase. I know I could put it in one of my 2wds, but I was just curious about my 4wd? Thanks Lee

its the same little 1.8L diesel that the I-mark isuzu car had.
makes its power at higher rpms than the 2.2L engine. but the high idle is still about the same as the 2.2L engine
it does not like to be luged
it gets sut and so on, billed up on the glow plugs, pe-burn chamber, much more than the 2.2L if ran slow and or short trips.
if your just driving a mile or so a day, it wont like it.

So the chevette diesel would probably be better off in a 2wd. Thanks for the replys. Lee

Actually the diesel you have is more than likely the C190 which is the 1.9L diesel. But like it was said before the diesel doesn't like to be lugged around and neither does the 2.2L. If you still are thinking about putting that diesel in one of your four wheel drives you will need to replace the bell housing on the front of the transmission cause the trans and transfer case are a single unit. The bell housing for the diesel is different than the bell housing for the gas engines by how the starter is placed on the engine. I know that the 1980 chevy luvs were offered with the C190 once upon a time but only in japan and austrailia. But your diesel is pretty much the same a the C223 just a little bit smaller. But hey good luck with the conversion. Contact me if you have any more questions.

In Australia the 5speeds from behind the I Mark diesels are much sought after. They have close ratios and bolt up to the G series gas engine. So this meens that the I Mark diesel should bolt up to a gasser 4x4 box, correct?

It does make sense in theory but I really can't say for sure without seeing it with my own two eyes. But if thats true than there really won't be much modification needed other than wiring in the glow plugs.
