I have an 81 2.2 diesel. It has a miss in it when its starts, on the number one cyl. it always clears in a minute or two and runs great. My question is, can the injectors be cleaned or should they be taken to a diesel shop.

A good shop can check them, rebuild, and match them(make them all work the same as possible). Some injectors are easy to rebuild, others hard, and most take special tools to check the pop pressure, when and what pressure a injector opens.

Check on what new injectors cost, and what a fuel shop charges to rebuild them.

I think the going rate is around $50 per injector, and of course if you do one, you should do them all.

On the other hand, there are several other possibilities for the symptoms you describe, and a fouled injector would be very low on my list, if on it at all. I'd first rule out air leaks in the fuel lines and fuel filter. By the way, how do you know it's cylinder #1?

He said cylinder # 1, but! On a 4 cylinder it starts from the front of the truck and goes to the rear. 1,2,3,4. No offense to anyone who knows, Maybe I don't know!!! What year is it?... 1969? Parrrrty. Toga, Toga, Toga,TTTTTT

The first thing that comes to my mind is a bad glowplug. Maybe this isn't the problem either, but I agree with Jack that the injectors are quite reliable and aren't usually a source of trouble.

Hey Guys,
The reason I know its the #1 cyl. is I tested them by loosening each line at the injector.
It could be a air leak but I have checked all lines, including the ones at the tank.
I would love it if it was a glow plug, to be honest it would make sense to me. The engine will not fire at all without the glow plugs. So if one cylinders glow plugs were not working the cylinder would be dead until heat from the other cylinders warmed it up. Maybe?

Won't fire on #1 until warm...I'd check compression before messing with the injectors.
