I just purchased an 81 Luv diesel. I have had other diesels for years and I am used to a lift pump that supplies the injection pump. This 2.2 doesn't appear to have one. My question is, I get a very rough idle when the truck sits overnight along with heavy fuel smoke(no oil). I have checked the return hoses and they look good. Is there any kind of check valve in the pump that keeps fuel from going back to the tank. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I believe there is a check valve -- but not positive. I'd be looking for a leak in the fuel supply line, somewhere between the tank and the filter, or even between the filter and the pump. Believe it or not, sometimes the hard lines wear through in contact with other surfaces. I'd also check the O-ring on the drain petcock. When changing a fuel filter, I opened mine to drain it. On closing it, I crossthreaded it, and it was sucking in air. Started fine, but died shortly.

You don't need a lift pump if the Injection Pump is healthy. Some owners have found that adding an inline pump does help, because their Injection Pumps are weak.

It almost sounds like it is miss-firing when cold. Do you know if your glow plugs work? All of them? My experience with smaller diesel engines is that they like to be glowed when cold, like the first start of the day.
Possibly an injector or 2 that may need some attention.

You said you are getting heavy fuel smoke at start up, which doesn't sound like a lack of fuel.

Just my 1.96c worth.

Definitely not a lack of fuel. I haven't checked the glow plugs yet, will a simple ohm test work or how should they be tested? Also, is it as simple as removing the injectors and cleaning them?
The thing thats odd is that with past diesels if you are getting air in the system as soon as it starts, within 30 seconds it clears up. This thing doesn't clear up for a mile or two and if you let it idle until it clears instead of driving it out, it idles up and down with a slight miss and them finally clears up once it warm.

Sometimes a leaking head gasket will cause similar symptoms when cold. Any steam out the exhaust when running rough?

no steam, it only does it for a couple of minutes when you first start. Its almost a stutter-slight rev-up-then idles down again.

Could you be getting air in a line or pump when setting over night?

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.
