Hello again. my water pump on my 81 diesel just started leaking the other day as i revved the engine a little bit. It seems to leak a small amount at idle but bad enough to do something about it. 1st of all would my first step to be to remove the water pump and look for a blown gasket or bad pump. 2. are these pumps really solid leaving it to likely being a gasket issue? 3. Lets say i need to remove the water pump anyone know what all i should take off ...radiator? etc....4. Does taking the pump off play with the timing belt at all or do i not have to worry about that. I just dont want to get in over my head. thanks for the help :D

Firstly find where its leaking from. If its leaking fom the small hole under the shaft (1/8 size hole) where the shaft exits the pump, the seal is worn and pump needs to be replaced. If its leaking from where the pump mates to the timing cover you may be able to reseal it with silicon gasket maker. Removing the pump will not take you to close to the timing. I would source a new pump before pulling the old, there may be too much corrosion to simply just reseal and go again.

The factory water pumps are supposed to be much more durable than aftermarket ones. There's a member of the IsuzuPup.com forum (JLEMOND) who can order Isuzu parts from their warehouses, and he generally keeps new water pumps "in stock" in his workshop.

It is not that big of a job. 4 bolts hold the radiator. 4 screws hold the fan shroud. The fan and fan clutch must come off in order to get to one of the bolts. It is a good opportunity to replace the timing belt, if the belt has not been replaced, and a lot of miles on the truck. However, replaceng only the water pump does not affect the timing belt at all.
By all means, go ahead and put a new pump on. As you most likely know, the cooling system is the most ignored, and least serviced system on your car. So do it right while you are there. let me add. after removing the fan shroud, and taking both hoses loose, the radiator slides straight up, then the fan shroud can be removed.

thanks for the tips. the leak has been found! it is in plain sight towards the top of the pump but a little on the drivers side. It is most definitely just the gasket. The owner of the truck previous to me said that the pump is not that old . Do you think it would work to just run a smear of sealant/sylicone over the leak without taking the pump off? I know thats a little white trash but the leak is only coming from a section about a quarter inch wide. Anyway i think i can take the pump off i just wanted to see if anyone thought this might work since it is so easy to get to the leak.
