My diesel transmission has recently been grinding when going in third and fourth.
Is there anything that help? My brother suggested Amsoil or some other synthetic.
I need to keep the trans alive as long as possible.

Thanks,bear

If it's just the synchros, that might help. Someone over at the Isuzu P'up forum strongly recommends a Redline synthetic. Just be sure to use the recommended weight--it's like a motor oil, NOT a gear lube. Lots of transmissions have been destroyed by using 90w gear oil when the manual recommends 30w motor oil, or 5w30.

On the other hand, if it's the bearings or gears, there's no magic lubricant that will help.

Is yours a 5-speed?

Jack

5w30 motor oil. It takes 1.7 quarts.

Thanks for the response. So I take it any good synthetic 5W30 motor oil would be OK?

Works fine, but it gets around the seals, they won't hold it in.

At one time, graphite was available in 3oz. tubes, about the size of your thumb. Have not seen it in years. I have fashioned a small funnel and put powdered graphite lubricant in noisy trannys and differentials. I have put as many as 4 of these tubes in one differential. It seems to mix well with whatever other type of lubricant you have, and, IMO, reduces the noise, and prolongs the life of gears. May be worth looking into.

Last time I saw it was at a hardware store. It's used as a lubricant for door locks.
