I've located a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel 5 spd and a 1985 Isuzu Pup Automatic. The fellow said he would only sell one of these but he left it pretty much up to me to decide. They are both in comparable shape, 130 K miles, running well with A/C, but my question for the forum is what kind of mileage can I expect with each, any known problems with the trans in each, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The 5 speed is a known weak link. Don't know much about the automatics. Search the site for references to the 5 speed in this section. You'll find an alternative tranny that you can use if the 5 speed does die.

Good luck,
Eric Q.

The auto is regarded as bulletproof, but it is geared quite lower than the 5-speed. The 5-speed has a 3.72 or 3.73 rear, and the auto has a 4.11. With only three speeds, it won't have nearly the cruising speed of the 5-speed. Mileage will be slightly lower, especially on the road.

By the way, whereabouts are you in Arkansas?

Jack

Thanks for the info. I have owned a 82 Chevy LUV with the 5 spd/diesel but I didn't know the auto was available until I saw this vehicle. I got a consistent 36 to 40 mpg in my LUV, so I'm guessing this auto should do in the low to mid 30s on MPG, right? I'm in western Arkansas.

If I recall correctly, that's what someone reported over at IsuzuPup.com.
