On my 82 LUV there is a small oil pump connected to the rear of the alternator.

Is there a specific part of the engine that is being lubricated by this pump?

I was thinking about this after discovering a significant drip from the banjo bolt on the back of the pump. I installed a couple of copper crush washers and stemmed the leak, but noticed the hole in the bolt was quite small and wondered about where the oil was being pumped to.

Is it the power steering pump?

I don't think so as my truck is equipped with "armstrong" power steering, (hense the large steering wheel) and there is engine oil being pump by it, (you can tell right away due to the distinct, black color of the oil).

Edit - rondog, I think you are somewhat correct. Upon further inspection I see that the pump draws engine oil from the block and pumps it to a unit labeled "master vac" which looks like a vacum assist brake assembly.

OK. so it's bolted to the back of the alt. Is the alt. whats driving the pump? Or is the eng. driving the pump?
Where do the oil lines come from and go to? Are there any other wires or hoses connected to the pump?

I'm thinking some kind of small PTO maybe.?.?

The oil line is coming up from the alternator pump, left of the master cylinder into the "Master Vac" unit which the master cylinder is bolted to.

Here is a dark shot of the rear of the alternator. The oil line is connected to the pump via a banjo bolt.

OK. Diesels don't have much for manifold vacuum like gas burners do. Does your truck have a vac. pump on it to make vacuum? I'm thinking not. So my guess is your power brake booster is not vacuum powered, but is an eng. oil hydraulic powered brake booster.

I'm just shooting in the dark here. We need someone with a manual on these 81-82 trucks.

yes it look like the vac. pump on my 81 diesel 4x4
the oil lubes the vanes in the pump and the returns to the pan as i remember, there is a return line on the bottom of the pump that returns the oil to the engine

1. braided line- oil presure line from engine
2. line on bottom of the pump on back of alt. oil return line
3. line on top of pump on back of alt. vac. to brake booster

all diesels running power brakes have a vac. or air pump, 6.9 and 7.3 fords have a vac. pump mounted under the alt. that is a stand alone
that run's on the same belt, the isuzu is a better design as it is oil lubed

and the brake system you are referring to is called a hydro-boost and they run off of the power steering pump to a hyd. power valve mounted behind the master cly. and they are on most 1 ton trucks all the way up to ford f-600's

Yea. I didn't think it would be used on such a little truck, but like I said I was just shooting in the dark.
It all makes a lot more sense now.
I don't open the hood on my 7.3 . It goes to the shop for anything more than an oil and lube.

As it turned out the leak was not coming from the banjo bolt, but the oil line at the fitting. It got progressively worse and I had to seek out a new braided line with two different sized banjo fitting.

This took some doing, but a local Car Quest parts guy found one in CA for a Isuzu Pup. Cost me $57.00 including freight.
