I know I'm going to get burned for this, but what is a lift pump and where is it located on my 82 LUV? Let the flaming begin...

Gas or diesel? Why would you be flamed asking a honest question?

Diesel. I've never heard of this until I got this truck. I figured a pretty basic question would get a lot of ribbing.

Basically the lift pump does just that, it lifts the fuel out of the tank and delivers it to the injection where the injection pump takes the high volume/low pressure fuel from the lift pump ans converts it to high pressure lower volume and times it for the cylinders.

That is the quick answer, hope it helps

Think of it as a primer pump for the injector pump.As injector pumps are more efficient when pre charged with a lift pump.

Gotcha. So is it in the tank or externally mounted?

Neither. There is no lift pump on stock '81-'87 diesel LUV/P'up trucks. It's not normally needed if the injection pump is working properly, and you're burning regular diesel fuel.

If your '82 has one, it's aftermarket. If you can't find it, it's probably not there.

No, I wouldn't advise running a seperate transfer pump/lift pump on a diesel vehicle because the engine's fuel injection pump already has a built-in lift pump. It is how the C223 diesel is set up and how most other diesels are too. It's the beauty of owning a diesel too, as having a fuel pump designed to deliver fuel to the engine is mainly just needed for gasoline vehicles. And some gassers have the fuel pump in the fuel tank, what a pain! As long as your diesel engine is running fine on diesel fuel there is no need to mount an individual electric pump to aid the injection pump. The factory never used one, why put one on now.
